ISRAEL’S TOP RUNNING EVENTS

While you could easily run the length and breadth of tiny Israel in no time, most people are content with running a maximum of 42.2 kilometers. Israel’s busy race calendar has something for everyone – from desert views in Eilat to historic beauty in Jerusalem. So, on your marks, get set, go!

Tel Aviv Night Run

It’s not always about the distance or your time. The Tel Aviv Night run is all about the atmosphere. Join over 25,000 runners, tens of thousands of enthusiastic spectators cheering you on as you run 10km through the White City. Whether you run or not, enjoy the fun finish at Ganei Yehoshua – Tel Aviv’s equivalent of Central Park.

Tel Aviv Samsung Marathon

See and be seen at the Tel Aviv Samsung Marathon. The course takes advantage of the best of Tel Aviv – good weather, flat terrain and beautiful beaches – with over 40,000 people expected to take part in what has become Israel’s largest running event.

As well as a full marathon, runners can participate in a half marathon, 10km and 5km race. Young runners (aged between nine and 12) can take part in a 1km kids mini marathon or a 500 meter run for youngsters aged between five-14 who have special needs. For those who power through the miles with their hands rather than their feet, there is a 42km hand cycle race.

Jerusalem Marathon

Run through time at the Jerusalem Marathon with a (hilly!) route that takes you past 3000 years of history. As well as the full marathon, there’s a half-marathon, 10km race, 5km run, 1.7km family race and even an 800m community race that’s open to everyone.

As well as an incredible atmosphere for participants and spectators alike, this is a serious race that attracts elite runners and international athletes. Even if you aren’t a runner, you can come out and enjoy the special vibe of Jerusalem on the move.

Sea of Galilee – Tiberias International Winner Marathon

“Running” for 40 years already, the Tiberias Marathon is the granddaddy of Israel’s long-distance races.

The marathon is famed for being the lowest in the world (200 meters below sea level). The route, which runs along the southern shore of the Sea of Galilee (Kinneret) and starts and ends in the city of Tiberias, is pretty flat – allowing those 42.2 kilometers to just go whizzing by! There are also options to take part in a half marathon or a 10km run.

Desert Marathon Eilat

The Eilat Desert Marathon is one of the newest races on the Israeli running scene.

As well as a full marathon, there is a half marathon, 10km or 5km run. The fun doesn’t stop at the finish line. The day before the marathon, there are a host of activities– including a family race, festive pasta dinner and music and dancing (probably best for those not running the next day!).

After the race, join in desert yoga and enjoy a “crazy desert marathon party.”

“If you survive that”, take advantage of your location and indulge in the full range of activities Eilat offers.
