Bus&Rail: Mitzpe Ramon

Train travel in Israel has its limits, unfortunately. But before judging too fast, be aware that the state of Israel has only existed for a relatively short period of time and also, that a lot of effort has been made and is still being made, to expand the train network. Therefore, plenty of destinations can not or only partially be reached by train, but we like to think of them as being not rail-able yet. This is the first out of three Bus&Rail articles about great places to visit in the south of Israel, that are reachable with sustainable public transport and hopefully also by train soon. Read below, how to travel to Mitzpe Ramon by train and bus.

Mitzpe Ramon by Train and Bus

The Crater

Mitzpe Ramon (or: Mitspe Ramon) is located on the rim of Makhtesh Ramon, the world’s largest erosion crater. Here, in the midst of Negev, you can find great hiking trails inside the crater as well as along its rim.

Useful information: Whereas you might have a soft breeze along the edges of the crater, the valley is very hot, especially around noon. Starting early in the morning or late in the afternoon is recommended. Be aware, that 1 litre of water per person and hour should be calculated and that you might not have any phone connection on the way. Better cover your head and don’t forget the sunscreen.

White rocks in the crater
Inside the crater, plenty of hikes with astonishing rock formations can be found.

The visitor centre in Mitzpe Ramon will provide you with all the information needed, e. g. customized hiking routes. Also, we recommend going to the Camel Mount, which is a great spot overlooking the crater. If you’re down for a great overnight experience, check out the tent camp Silent Arrow.

The Israel National Trail, which is a 1100km hiking route all across the country from the very north all the way to the south also comes across Mitzpe Ramon. Even though it’s not a circular route, you can easily walk in one of the two directions starting from Camel Mount and enjoy great views into the valley.

Public transport: Mitzpe Ramon by train and bus

Even though Mitzpe Ramon cannot entirely be reached by train yet, combining the train and the bus from Tel Aviv is possible and convenient. It is also possible to take a bus all the way south. However, it takes a long time and several changes will be necessary. Thus, we recommend travelling as follows:

1. Train to Be’er Sheva:

A train ride from Tel Aviv to Be’er Sheva takes approximately 1.5 – 2h. Train schedules and prices can be checked here.

2. Proceed by bus:

Bus Nr. 392 will take you from Be’er Sheva to Mitzpe Ramon within around 1.5h. The busses are operated by Egged and you can find the schedules and additional information on their website.

If you’re planning on travelling further from Mitzpe Ramon, we highly recommend the Red Canyons close to Eilat. Check out article Nr. 2 from the Bus&Rail articles about travel destinations in the south.
